WElcome to the 2019-20 School Year!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi families! I am super excited to teach your 1st grader this year! I am also excited to be a part of an awesome team of 1st grade teachers. I was born and raised in Orange County, CA. After getting my BA in English from Brigham Young University, I started working in the software industry as a regional administrator and marketing associate which led me to the San Francisco Bay area during the dotcom boom (where I met and married my husband 18 years ago). His work in the transportation industry took us from San Francisco and back to his hometown of Richmond, Virginia for two years before we landed in Carlsbad in 2009. While in Virginia I decided to pursue my interest in teaching and received my teaching credential from the University of Richmond.
When my kids were little I substitute taught in Carlsbad and Vista part-time which allowed me to volunteer in their classrooms and be a PTA mom. Once they got a little older I started teaching K-5 PE in Carlsbad Unified for what turned into 4 years, then worked in Encinitas full-time for 1 year as a K-3 Science Specialist and Garden Science Teacher, 1 year as a 4th grade reading instructor and 6th grade reading/writing teacher at the Summer ELL Academy and 2 years as the Health & Wellness teacher which included teaching PE, yoga and character development. How time flies! My babies are now 17 (Alexis) and 15 (Dillon) and both attend Carlsbad High School. As a family, we love to cook and eat good food, which means I spend a lot of time doing Zumba and taking long walks! I love to spend time with my mom at her summer cabin in Idaho where we ride horses and float the river by her house and in the winter she migrates to Mexico, where, if I’m lucky, I get to go on my spring break. We spend Fall at the Lancer football games watching my son, and football is always on in our home. Our favorite family vacation spot is Cannon Beach, Oregon. Oh ya, I also I love to fish, watch movies, read historical fiction novels and pamper myself at the spa.
As your child’s teacher I will strive to create a healthy classroom culture by helping students develop skills to manage their emotions, resolve conflicts, and make responsible decisions. First grade is a very big year for making leaps and bounds in reading and I am thrilled to be a part of this milestone with my students! I hope they all leave first grade with memories of reading great books, having lots of laughter, and making wonderful friends!
Please send your child to school with:
1- a zippered pencil pouch like the one pictured. The pouch will be kept with them throughout the day as we utilize flexible seating and will be stored in their cubby with limited space.
2-a pair of scissors
3-a couple of special pencils that make them happy to write :-) Otherwise, good old Ticonderoga pencils will be provided.
*Please see list of community supplies below that we will need.
